wiper motor
wiper motor
Has anyone installed a variable speed wiper motor? If so what did you use and did it work with the original arms? Thanks in advance.

Re: wiper motor
Some years of Sweptlines came with variable speed wipers.
My 66 W100 has a 68 D100 variable wiper motor and switch in it. Bolts right in.

Re: wiper motor
I pulled one off a '63 parts truck for my early 65, the motors looked identical just more wires, if you get the multi-speed switch the single speed knob transfer over to the new switch and the single-speed motor pops right out, whole unit is a direct bolt in from the single speed. The switch is a bit odd, it has a wire wound resistor like the dash dimmer, so instead of 3 or 4 settings you have full voltage control of the motor, I had to open up my switch and grease it, seems they all dry up and seize.

Re: wiper motor
did not see a year, 61 to 68 were single or venerable, just need the switch and wires to match, 69 to 71 used single and 2 speed different wires and switch to match 69 t0 71 used the same motor as the A body (Dart)cars lat 60s, early 70s, has to move the plate on the housing to match throw of the arms

Re: wiper motor
The year & model is stated in the first paragraph of the opening post, '71 D100. It has the two speed wiper motor, which I believe was all they offered in a truck. I wasn't sure what the OP had, as he didn't indicate as much in his post. During the same vintage, Chrysler did offer a variable speed/3-speed wiper motor as an option to the two speed, with many passenger cars, if not all. I had a '69 Dart that had the variable speed option. The wiper switch had a rheostat incorporated into it to vary the wiper speed.jeffc57 wrote: ↑Sun Mar 13, 2022 5:49 pmdid not see a year, 61 to 68 were single or venerable, just need the switch and wires to match, 69 to 71 used single and 2 speed different wires and switch to match 69 t0 71 used the same motor as the A body (Dart)cars lat 60s, early 70s, has to move the plate on the housing to match throw of the arms
My '70 Charger R/T was originally equipped with the two speed wiper motor. When I added the six pack, I found the two speed motor was not compatible with the six pack air cleaner. The armature of the two speed wiper motor is parallel to the long axis of the vehicle. As such, the motor housing protruded into the engine compartment and the six pack air cleaner would not clear it. The armature on the variable speed wiper motor is perpendicular to the long axis of the vehicle. As such, the motor housing hugs the firewall and there is no clearance issue with the six pack air cleaner. The wiring harness and the wiper motor linkage are the same between the two different wiper motors in the Charger. Instead of a variable, rheostat, wiper switch, it was a three position/speed switch where a high wattage, fixed value, resistor replaced the rheostat and offered a third wiper speed in comparison to the standard two speed wiper motor.
At first glance, one would think a person could replace the two speed wiper motor, where originally equipped, with a variable speed, replace the switch with the Dart rheostat switch, and add the wiring. However, the wiper motor mounts with the motor housing on the interior side of the cab. I'm not sure if there would be mounting clearance for the motor housing of the variable speed wiper motor.
Thus, in part, why I suggested the intermittent wipe switch. Personally, I find the intermittent wipe feature is much handier than a variable speed. Plus, you gain the mist function and washer motor control switch. I've been very pleased with its operation in my D100.

Re: wiper motor
I have never been a fan of rheostats, especially with higher current motors. There is enough internal wear due to micro-arcing that they just get flakey, especially at the bottom end. But heck, that way they can do both continuous AND intermittent operation! They can also be electrically noisy.

Re: wiper motor
They were job security. I was in the two-way radio business, with Motorola, for nearly 40 years. Noisy volume control potentiometers were a frequent repair. Now they just send a string of 0s and 1s to the microp which, in turn, controls the gain of the audio stages. So I was forced out of business by the lack of noisy volume controls!Wildergarten wrote: ↑Thu Mar 17, 2022 7:57 amI have never been a fan of rheostats, especially with higher current motors. Yeah, I could tell by your preferences that you'd been there. They suck, until an EMP. With the politicians of the world going psycho the way they are, I'm betting on one if the sun doesn't get to us first. There's good reason to keep these old trucks running, especially if one can stash some extra alternator diodes.
