Finally decided rather than cutting up the dash and installing an original radio I went the modern route.
Picked up a dual coil single speaker for the dash and digital media receiver (am/fm bluetooth). With the
dual coil I ran left & right speaker wires to the dash speaker. Used the switched power from the ignition,
constant power off the fuse block from the cigar lighter and jumped off the dash lights for the dimmer.
Then found some nice clean metal for the ground. Since it never had an antenna I picked up a marine
antenna ( basically a 4 foot wire) designed to just plug in and sit behind the console on a boat. It works
great. Speaker and head unit from Crutchfield and antenna from Amazon. About $140 all in.

Came with a mic as well so in addition to streaming music I can also use my phone. Also has a usb port
on the front to charge my phone or play music from a jump drive. Hardest part of the install was mounting
the speaker. I really took my time and didn't rush things a spent about 2-1/2 hours total. Really happy how
it turned out. Removable face plate too so hopefully I'll have a while lol.

Did you just put in ONE speaker??? Or did you install a 2nd speaker behind the seat?

It's a dual coil speaker so it takes both left and right and give you stereo sound in a single speaker. They're made for older cars
with the single hole in the dash.

Interesting.... I never heard of those before!

The lighter in the dash like that was factory stock in those yrs. Not aftermarket, nor dealer installed.

Good to know, thanks. The knob matches the rest of the dash knobs and it runs off the fuse block so that
makes sense. I'm assuming mine is a later 64' build because I have the factory fuse block.

Would that lighter have been an option or did they all have them. I can see my next project !!

I believe it was an option, but not sure.

I am pretty sure lighter was an option as some trucks dont have them. my current 61 doesn't but the previous other two 61s I have had did come with it. same location as above pic

I didn't know either until I started looking into stereos. I wasn't wanting to cut holes in doors or anything.
Once I saw them and realized I could mount it in the dash speaker hole it sold me on getting an inexpensive
am/fm digital media head unit. I'm not looking for high fidelity, just some basic tunes. The connectivity with
my phone was a bonus. It's only about 4-5 inches deep and was really easy to mount. When I remove the face
plate you barely notice it's there with the black carpet as a back drop.

It was part of the "Custom cab" package

It was part of the "Custom cab" package

Just a selective option when ordering. Wasn't limited to custom cab pkgs.

Must be an added fuse block or a very late 64 because they didn’t have one. Is the axle an original tapered?

The 63 d 400 we had ,had no fuse block. The 64 d400 had a fuse block.
