Temp and fuel gauge go fully to right (Hot and full)

Ok, so I know this Isnt an uncommon problem. I have read as many of the posts as I could find here.

It is a 1968 Dodge D200.

However, I need someone to explain this to me in slow and preferably first grade terms as electrical has always been my weak point.

I see that someone of you made a voltage limiter but my first question is where was the original limiter located and why cant you just replace it?

Next question is instead of making one, can I just buy a replacement for the stock pieces or something that will make them work correctly?

Lastly, I have a brand new sending unit so we know (or hope) thats not the problem but how would I know of the gauges are destroyed? The gas gauge shoots straight to full as soon as you turn the switch on and the temp gauge does it about the time the gas gauge hits the halfway mark.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Gauges going to full/hot means that that leg of the circuit is shorted to ground.

RTE limiter IVR3 or 4 but you still have to install it in a vehicle that never had one externally mounted. I'm getting ready to buy one for my 71. Made the one with transistors and it worked fine. Gauges were a little slow but it worked. It also recently stopped working. RTE allows for between 9V and 18V, provides ground fault protection as well as voltage input protection. They're advertised at $50.00 and according to other forum threads $10.00 shipping.

Is that something Summit would have? I live near them.

Just did a search and didn't find them at Summit. Did find it for $55.00 + $4.00 on eBay. That's one whole dollar cheaper!

The stock limiter is integral to your fuel gauge. When they're kaput, its easier
to make your own. The link is for a diagram for an easy home made limiter.
I made one for each of my trucks.

If you can solder, this is an easy piece to make. You just pop rivet the
pieces to a thick chunk of aluminum which acts as a heat sink.
This is a two step limiter.... dropping to 8v and then to 5v. I bought
the parts from Parts Express.

I just bought the one on eBay. It is RTE and one dollar cheaper and by that I mean it's the actual manufacturer selling on eBay for a dollar less. Penny saved right? The one I made did work well but I never mounted the heat sink to any thing else and I believe that's what killed it. I was also interested in the RTE because it will take in as much as 18V and reduce it to a pulsating 5V like the original. Supposed to be here Friday. I'll have it in before Monday.

Update:

The problem has been solved.

A member here called me and told me what was causing this condition. It was the sending unit. He asked was the unit brand new and I said yes. He said that is whats causaing the problem.

Well, I ordered a used one and it was here when I got home today. I installed it tonight and, sure enough, gauges working perfectly.

I would like to thank the person who helped me. Not mentioning his name yet because I want to make sure he is OK with that.

Very good to hear. Just installed the RTE and am pleased at how simple it was. Only had to make one very short wire.

If your interested... Had the RTE limiter in for several weeks now and are very pleased with it. Gauges are quick to respond on start up and function flawlessly.
