Did you open up the fuel gauge to bend the shorted tab back? If that is still touching or burnt, it will probably have the same effect?

I must have missed a step. This wasn't mentioned in the tutorial that I was sent. I need to open the fuel gauge up? Would you mind elaborating a bit

I used the limiter from the schematic and attached it to the 12V in connection of the fuel gauge. The gauges are a little slow to respond but other than that it works flawlessly. I did 12V to 8V and 8V to 5V because of the heat. If your not paying attention those transistors generate enough heat to do serious damage to wires or your skin i.e. 2nd and 3rd degree burns. Very painful. If you supply 5V in the thermal resistor will never heat up enough to do anything and voltage will pass straight through and if it's already completely bad so is the fuel gauge.
This is the previous post where I got my info. It clearly states it is not necessary to do anything to the old limiter.

All of this is superfluous right now anyway you said you weren't using the fuel gauge. Just attach your feed wire to the temp gauge.

If the factory limiter is a dead short, it is no different than a wire and connecting the new 5V supply to either terminal is the same. If the factory limiter is open, then connecting to the 12V side will not work and u MUST connect to the gauge side.
If by chance the factory limiter is still operating, then connecting 5V to the 12V side may reduce the 5V by 60% and u will only have 2V rather than 5V at the gauge side.
Save yourself a lot of hassle and connect your new limiter to the gauge side. U must be sure no 12V remains connected to the 12V terminal.

Have you checked your 12v under load key on everything hooked up. I have seen full12v and under load drop to 0v. My 2 cents
