68 W200 fuse clips and steering wheel removal.

Post by FL2WA »

Hey guys, New to the forum, just picked up a 1968 Power wagon, been checking out this forum. I've got a problem with the brake lights not coming on, even though the taillights and blinkers work. Searched and it looks like it's in the column with the turn signal stuff. Wondering if anyone knows how to get the steering wheel off to access this.

Also, in looking at the fuse block there were several fuse clips that were corroded. I cleaned most of them up but a couple of them broke. Any ideas where I can source these? Most of the wiring looks pretty good so I'm not looking to rewire the whole thing. If the clips are too hard to find I was thinking of updating the fuse block to ATC blade style, maybe getting 2 four way blocks, having one hot and one switched. Thoughts?

Thanks to this forum I have the full wiring diagram, blowups of the fuse block and turn signal/hazard diagram. Thanks, it's been helpful so far!

To make it simple, you'll need a "Steering wheel puller" to remove that...
Google & YouTube will provide plenty of instructions and pictures.

Borrow one from an O'Reilly (or other auto parts store that loans tools), or
buy a kit, Harbor Freight or your choice.

Ok, it kinda looked like it was set up for a gear puller but I wasn't sure. Autozone down the street loans tools. Thanks. Any ideas on fuse clips or should I just get new fuse block?

I was told one of the previous owners put a 440 in it from an rv. It's got seats that probably came from that so I'm guessing the steering wheel is from that too.

The hazard switch on the column is not being used, the original on the left side of dash works. Turn signals work and I'm getting continuity from brake pedal switch through the unused hazard switch to the white wire where it goes into signal side. Not sure how turn signals can work and not brake lights. There must be something wrong inside the signal switch but it doesn't look like I can open it without breaking plastic.

Don't think the steering column is from a 68 Pick up. Column probably from the van. Never had 4 way flasher switch on column in 61 to 71 Sweptys.

So do you guys think the problem (no brake lights) is inside the turn signal plastic piece that doesn't come apart?

Pedal switch is good. Getting power up into turn signal, the brass contact buttons are pretty worn inside the signal switch. Thinking I need a new signal switch.
