Adjust or replace neutral safety switch?

Post by Abloch »

So, I did a search and found a few posts but nothing specific to what I am trying to figure out. I can not find ANYTHING in the FSM specific about the neutral safety switch so I am coming to you for your thoughts.

318 automatic

Just recently the truck won't start in park, i'd say 90% of the time. Neutral seems better but I still have to jiggle the shifter to find the sweet spot so definitely the NSS acting up.

Is this the sign that the switch is going bad or is there an adjustment? I see where I can lengthen or shorten the cable but the truck was doing fine before and then out of the blue this starts.

Thanks

How about a part number for a single pin NSS?

Guys will ask for the year of the truck... but it sounds like it is a neutral switch going bad. HOWEVER, do not just go buy one on my "say so".... :thinking

1968

Found the part numbers. 2495537,2496133,2586994,3004087

obsolete part and not having any luck with the aftermarket. Looks like NOS only. Time to open up my wallet and head over to ebay.

Another possibility is a loose/dirty connection at the starter relay. I had a similar problem with my 67 van. Cleaning up the connection took care of it.

Check your connections first, then try grounding the wire at the nss. If it starts every time, replace the nss. Buy the newer style 3 pin switch, buy a plug, and you will only need to use the center wire.
