On my negative battery cable there is a small pigtail that comes off of the post connector and has a quick connector end on it.
What is the purpose of this smaller gauge pigtail on the negative battery cable?

The pig tail is for your use as needed, it's an auxillary ground wire. I grounded mine to the radiator support.
