trun signal switch, how to feed wire down column

Post by 68fish »

I rebuilt a turn sig. switch for my 65 D100, now, what is the easiest way to fish the wires down the column for re install??? Do I have to take the steering column out of the truck?? Any tricks to do this without removal of the steering column.

Thanks.

Well, there is no way to snake a turn signal switch wiring harness down the steering column with steering shaft still in the way. I pulled the column, then tied a string to the end of the old harness so when I pulled it out, I could tie string to new harness to pull it back down through. It was a little bit of a bear even with the column out of the truck on my work bench. While out, I also put a little grease in the bearing assembly. Will finish the whole project next time in my shop. Cross your fingers all lights and blinkers work now, they should.

I've replaced 3 turn signal switches w/o removing the column shaft. Takes a little patience. Taped the ends of the lower wires together and the uppers together and pushed them down the shaft. Used a dental pick to fish them out the respective openings. :study :Thumbsup .

I guess thats why they say dont mess with Texas! Your more than a man than me!

In my deffence, The new harness I installed did have a few repair splices in it making it slightly wider in spots. I know this didnt help matters. I could have never of done it with the column and shaft inside.

One nice think is it only takes 3 bolts to pull the column out. Really no big deal.
