Updating this post . The green wire off the alternater goes to vr. As soon as I unplug it my voltage gauge on the dash .goes to the middle. When I plug it back in it discharges .

Do you have these wires connected to your alternator?
Green
Orange
Black

Your basing that you have no charge cause the gauge shows a discharge. You would be best to see what is happening at the BAT Pos post. Maybe the gauge was unhooked and wires reversed. Time to get out a meter. :thinking

When voltage is low,the green wire (field wire)becomes grounded at the VR.This causes your alternator to start charging. Is your battery fully charged ? How many volts do you have on the black wire with key on?
