60 Amp vs. 75 Amp alternator

Post by wally426ci »

Any thoughts?

New harnesses everywhere and cleaned up elsewhere. I just toasted a 75 amp square back. I am wondering if 60 amps would be fine....

Stock everything except for electronic ignition. AM radio that plays ipod and I have a cigar lighter for charging things. The only other thing I may do one day is trailer harness and maybe an amp for the stereo? :thinking

Shawn,
Most square back alternators are of the two field terminal design. Was yours?

I think for your truck 60 amp is fine. you don't really have power anything to need the amps. if you had a big stereo or something then that would be different. I have the stock alternator on my truck and I don't think its any more than 60 amp, its been on there for 10 years now. and if you do end up with a short some where having less amps will mean less current to melt everything probably. :2cents

Thanks Kenny!

I did like this article:

http://www.stangtv.com/features/choosin ... r-hot-rod/

This explains it to not be a big deal to have a little more than not enough amperage.

I am leaning toward getting the 75 but I wanted to hear any pros and cons before buying....

For anyone interested, I went with a 75 amp powermaster.
