Click click click from starter

Post by 63d100sixer »

Wiring up my 71. Converting to electronic ignition, and electronic voltage regulator.

Wiring was a mess when I got it. Was able to get a diagram via Hewy but its really really hard to read.

Motor/trans/starter came from a daily driver truck. Sat for maybe 2-3 months before going in to the 71. I believe I have everything hooked up correctly, yet click click click from the starter.

Could bad grounds cause an issue?

Yes the battery is fully charged. Used it to fire up the Lincoln to move it. Connections at battery are clean/no corrosion. Starter relay was replaced with another one. Same issue. The neutral safety switch is not hooked up, and the trans is in neutral.

Throw me some ideas guys. Hoping its not the starter. Only extra one I have is my high torque mini for the red truck. Not teally wanting to use it on this truck :(

You say that the battery connections are clean, but double check the connections on the starter relay, and also down on the battery. Corrosion CAN build up inside the battery cables too. To BYPASS the relay, jump across the Batt cable and the smaller wire that goes down to the starter. That will eliminate any problems with the relay (even if it is new) By jumping it this way, you'll also bypass the neutral switch. IF the starter turns over at this point, you can also eliminate the starter as being your problem

Tap on the starter with a Block of wood or "LIGHTLY" with a hammer to make sure it isn't 'stuck' from rust that built up over some time.

Just a couple of quick ideas off the top of my head... but FIRST make sure BOTH cable connections on starter are CLEAN & TIGHT.

Tried the relay bypass/screwdriver trick. Still click click click. Pulled starter, hooked it up directly to the battery and she made a gawdawful clunk sound and then spun. I found an old spare I have from the Motorhome. She drags, but always spun over. Put it in, and still CLICK CLICK CLICK! Got my voltmeter out to check for voltage, then had to leave for a minute. Came back and honey chewed it into pieces :censored

I'm guessing that there's a massive voltage drop somewhere, maybe in the relay to starter cable :thinking

All is good to go :Thumbsup

I'm not saying what it was, because I'm not sure. Pulled everything apart, and went wire for wire again. Put in some gas, crank and varoom!

Sounds like that one of your cables wasn't contacting just quite good enough and by taking it apart, and then putting it back together was just enough to make a good contact. Just my thought though... :salut
