power at ignition switch?
Is there power going to the ignition switch or does it work my connecting a ground? If power is supplied to the ignition switch, which wire is suppose to supply the power? I'm not getting power to the switch and it would be a lot easier to back track the issue if I knew what wire should have power.
Thanks

So maybe somebody who is better at reading diagrams then I am cab help. Here's the diagram I found.

Re: power at ignition switch?
The larger black wire is getting straight power from the Alternator which is coming off of your Ammeter.
The red going out supplies power everywhere else once you turn the switch.... Hope that helps.

Re: power at ignition switch?
Ok. That mostly helps, I think. Maybe I have a follow up question.
Does the starter position of the ignition switch work by completing a ground circuit? What I'm trying to figure out is the starter, starter relay and ignition switch wiring. So I assume, if no power goes to the ignition switch until the truck is already started, then the only way for the switch to let the starter know that it's time to start is to complete a ground circuit?
If my thinking is right, what wire completes the ground? Or can somebody correct my thinking about this?

Re: power at ignition switch?
if you hit the tab for the black wire it will always be Hot. Hitting the switch (no idea how it works) sends power to the starter....

Ok. Then that's my problem. That gives me something to trace. Thanks.

Re: power at ignition switch?
Keep in mind for 70 automatics, there is a ground wire from the starter relay to the neutral safety switch/ back up light switch that completes the circuit to engage the starter relay.hillbillybuddha wrote:

Re: power at ignition switch?
Ok, I figured out the issue, broke out the soldering iron and fixed that issue. Now I'm getting power to the starter relay via the orange wire but still not get the starter to engage. I can get it to start if I jump the battery post with the starter solenoid post. I'm thinking I have the wrong (or a bad) relay. I've seen two different styles. One that is on the truck now, it has four posts, one of which isn't used (which I really think is a poor design because the battery post and the starter solenoid are so close that I have to shove a piece of rubber between the posts so they don't touch) and another kind that had three posts. That's the one I hope I'm suppose to use.
Anyone happen to know if the starter relay is suppose to have 3 or 4 posts?
Thanks
