1967 D100 brake/turn signal wiring headaches

Post by acurtiss »

I'm attempting to undo some of the improvisational experiments of a previous owner of my D100, and I'm running into some dead ends with regard to the turn signal switch and brake light relationship. I'm not even sure what info I need right now, but here's a simple question to start: when the brake light switch is engaged, shouldn't there be 12v at the 'dark green' and one of the yellow output wires of the turn signal switch, ie the ones with the big bullet connectors to the firewall? On the wiring diagram here on this site, it appears that the turn signal switch itself bridges the r/l rear lights with the white brake switch wire, but when testing today I wasn't getting voltage on those wires.

Also, if anyone has a stock setup and could take a photo of the connectors in the engine compartment, and even more ideally, on the firewall behind the dash, that would be a great help. I feel like I'm looking at a completely incorrect setup.

thanks
Aaron

Check for power at the fuse, then at the brake pedal switch. Making sure the switch is good. If that all has 12 volts, you should have power at the bulkhead connector on dark green and yellow when applying the brake pedal. (light green and yellow are front turn signal ). Could be bad turn signal switch or wires hacked up.

Thanks, I think I figured out the problem but will need to investigate further once the rain clears up here. The previous owner spliced together the front and rear signal wires under the hood, so there are only two wires attached at the firewall. The two that are disconnected under the dash must be to the front signals and not the rear, as I had previously thought. It's a royal mess but I'm not prepared to replace the entire harness, I just want the important stuff working. I have confirmed that the brake light switch works just fine. Does the white wire from the turn signal terminate at the firewall connector as well, providing an extra connection (presumably for a trailer or ??) under the hood?

The white wire in 67 should only feed the steering column turn signal switch. In the earlier years when turn signals were not installed the white wire did run through the bulk head for the brake lights.

I'd say that, aside from the connector, they're likely to fit. :salut :Thumbsup
