Silly-ass question about instrument cluster wiring...

Post by 66patrick »

Do the normal cluster and the HD gauge cluster use the same wiring harness??? Is the HD tach cable-driven or is it electric? If electric, is it a transistorized tach? I'm buying an HD cluster from a forum member, and thought about the wiring as an aside. So, are there any changes I need to consider when changing out clusters, in terms of wiring?

I would think that the wiring is the same for the gauges and the tach uses an extra harness. Just can't see a totally different harness for the H D Gauge option. Just my guess.

Patrick,
The wiring is indeed the same, with added wires for the tach. There were cable driven tachs in Med.Duty trucks, but most were electric and require a sender like a Sun eb9a or the like.

I believe the tachs were different depending on the year. I know the early trucks required a tach sender but not sure about 69-71.

yes - the earlier tachs are different but all years used a sender.

Patrick - i converted mine to a one wire tach using RedLine Gauge works. the senders are usually full of corrosion or don't work very well.

i have had my butt in a few HPP trucks and the only ones that worked were the converted ones like mine.
