Gauge Rebuilding

Post by Gibber »

I have a small side business restoring 60-74 Mopar instrument clusters. Since I now own a 68 D200 as of Tuesday, I'm sure I will be looking at the condition and calibration of those gauges. If anyone else needs help, please feel free to message me...

Thanks,

Mark

Sweet. Welcome to the forum.

Would be nice to see what the calibration specs are for temp and oil.

Thanks,

Almost all of the Mopar gauges from 1960 to 1974 use the thermo mechanical principle of a bimetal strip wrapped with insulated nichrome wire. The nichrome wire heats up based on a 5V input and variable resistance input from the sending unit. For the temp gauge, 32 ohms equals about 170 degrees F, 14 ohms equals 230 degrees, and 10 ohms equals 250 degrees.

I will put down the resistance values for the oil press and fuel shortly....

Thanks Gibber.

On your site you listed specific temps and oil pressures in relation to the markings on the gauge faces, was hoping you could post something similar for our trucks when you're fiddling with your gauges. I'm sure they are pretty close to the same if not exactly the same but would be nice to know exactly what they are.
Temp Gauge:

Lower hash mark on normal operating range 170 degrees F
Upper hash mark on normal operating range 230 degrees F
Far RH hash mark 250 degrees F

Oil Press Gauge

Lower hash mark on normal operating range 10 psi
Upper hash mark on normal operating range 80 psi

I will certainly post that info once I have time to check out the gauges in our truck...
