LED replacement bulbs.
Find the number of the bulb you want to replace and search for a replacement.
LED 1157's are pretty easy to find. I would have to see one before I bought
one though. I am afraid the directional nature of LEDs will not light up the
whole housing, but only produce a bright 3/4" spot in the middle.

There are places that can make custom panels to fit in housings, but these
housings are so shallow, the individual LEDs would easily be visible.

Yes, they make direct replacement led bulbs for just about everything now. Check out www.superbrightleds.com for tons of options (brightness, beam direction, ect). NAPA even has direct replacement LED headlights now, but they are really pricy! $200+, but they sure look cool.

I have a set of 1157/1156 LED bulbs ( http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00APT ... ge_o02_s00 ) from amazon on the tail lights of my truck, but they are in trailer light housings and they light up really well even looking into the sun. That said I'm gonna buy some amber LED lights for the front because the halogen lights in the front blinkers get hot and I don't want to melt my lenses.

You can put led's anywhere you have incandescents, but sometimes with the signals, you need to add a flasher designed for led's. Had to in my fargo, the signals would not work with the leds, so I bought a flasher from napa that has an extra ground, fixed the issue, no problem.

I bought a set for my 70 W200 and they were not making ground, I have tried multiple bulbs and same issue. That being said I have tested them and they do light up the whole housing, on the side it worked. In parking lamp mood they were very bright. The stops and directionals were amazing. I have also tried these same bulbs in my 85 caprice (yeah its an old square box sedan) I had the same problem. Maybe the ones I had were just bad grounds in the bulbs but I don't know. I do like the idea of LED tail lights.
I have two amber ones on the front end and have had no problems up front. Those are the ones from Autozone. I tried the tail lights from autozone as well. Surprising how they work in the front but not in the back.
