Post by ZAR »

Where can I buy a new starter relay thats like the original? I am replacing my battery cables and the post on the starter relay broke off when I tried to remove the nut. Thanks.

NAPA, Autozone, etc.
They stayed the same on the trucks through the early 90's as I recall.

:thinking
If they don't have one for a '64 ask for one for a '78 or a '84.
It is the same one as on my 79 B200 van.
SHOULD BE NAPA # SR3 made by Echlin..................

There might be two different part numbers for the auto tranny
vs. manual tranny relays. The auto tranny relay has an extra
post for the neutral safety switch.

If you find yourself in a bind and can't find the proper truck relay, the cars of the
same era used the same relay. The cars just had a different mounting bracket.
I had a car relay on my 71 for a couple months, because I had an extra one on the
shelf for my Plymouth.

Why not just go to NAPA first? Most parts, and most knowledgeable counter people (most of the time!), not to mention better parts. :joker

:2cents Relay for manual tranny is part# SR4

Out of curiosity what is the difference between SR3 and SR4? :study
Ampacity, # of pins, their location, grounded or ungrounded, etc? :thinking

The auto version has an extra pin which attaches to the neutral safety (backup light) switch,
and will not let the truck start in gear.

Since all mine are autos all I've used are SR3s. Does the plug in harness fit the same on the SR4 and just bypass the neutral lockout switch pin?
What I'm asking ( I GUESS) is can you use the SR3 as a "universal" relay?
At one time I thought I remembered reading {or being told} that one of the relays was 'grounded' internally to the body and one wasn't.
Just asking.

If you use the auto tranny relay on a truck with a manual transmission, you must run a ground wire to the extra post that the wire from the NSS would normally plug into. That's what the NSS does, it provides a ground for that particular prong on the relay, but only in Park/Neutral. When the shifter is in another gear, the ground circuit is "open" and the relay won't send power to the starter.

SR3 and SR4 Photos showing the extra pin. (SR3 has the Extra Pin) It also looks like the pin on the SR4 is just grounded to the body, but can't say for sure. Just saying thats what it looks like.

Thanks for that bit of info! I have the "auto trans" one on mine and I just grounded out that extra leg for it to work.
