Turn Signals Light But Don't Blink

Post by Daddiojoe »

Thanks as always for your constant help. I've been struggling w/ re-wiring, and make major progress but now have a brand new problem.

My left turn signals, front and back, light but do not blink. They used to blink before I changed rear 1157 bulbs to LEDs.

When using the hazards, everything works fine
I have an old-style add-on turn signal unit with its own flasher wiring--everything works fine w/ those flashers, too
LED's all around
Everything but the left rear has an extra ground wire.
Same symptoms with a different flasher.
This happened fairly suddenly; it used to be that the right rear did not work.

What really confuses me is that they work as hazards, but not as turn signals.

Your expertise is always appreciated,

I had this problem as well. My front turn signal was not grounded properly.
The socket for the bulb grounds to the bulkhead, and was not grounded, after doing so it works good now.
It did flash slow, so i put a flasher in it rated for pulling a trailer and it works normal now.
Mine was left rear after putting LED lights on also. weird.
I'm your huckleberry.

Your new LED bulbs won't work with your old school flasher relay - the old ones are bimetalic, and work from thermal loading - because your new bulbs don't draw enough current, they won't heat up the bimetalic strip enough to get it to bend causing the flashing. You may be able to get by with LED on one end of the truck, but not in the other since they are on the same truck - LED rear, incandecent on the front. Or the other option is to buy a digital flasher relay

AHA! :idea

Thanks for the great explanation, Craig. I would never have figured that out. Another case of this sight being very very valuable.
