Turn signal switch replacement
Turn signal switch replacement
One brake light on my '65 D100 occasionally fails to light. Wiggling the turn signal lever often helps. The replacement turn signal switches (Mopar part numbers 1939389 or 2510945) are pricey (around $100). I've heard that the later '72-and-up switches are the same except for the addition of a four-way flasher unit -- and NAPA says they sell them for less than $25. I don't have a Mopar part number and price for the newer switch since the dealer doesn't have catalogs that go back that far. Could I substitute the later unit, either removing the flasher switch or opening a hole in the column for the flasher button? Anyone got an earlier switch and a later switch out of the column to compare?

Re: Turn signal switch replacement
the one that i replaced my 63 with came out of a 71 van, that had a four way flasher. I just left the switch out for the four way and its been fine ever since. I should have grabbed the steering wheel too, but i didnt know at the time. I was told that i could have used any switch up to 76. I dont know how true this is, but i got lucky and found the van.
you could try vintagepowerwagons.com I know they have electrical parts. maybe even part numbers you could cross reference
Good luck and let us know if you find anything out.

Re: Turn signal switch replacement
Is this your switch?
That is my 70, and it is the same as the cars.
I bought a new one for my 69 Fury last year
for $50 from Hardens Muscle Car World.

The website is kinda weak, but they have them.

Proper grounding is key to having your lights work correctly. They have some paint and yearsof dust and dirt on them, so take the light buckets out and use wire brush to clean behind the screws and on the frame so the contact is better.

Re: Turn signal switch replacement
For your application ('68 ?), not easy to find new replacement.
They aren't cheap when you do find one.
Hope you find one!

Re: Turn signal switch replacement
Pretty sure you can make this work, if you have the time, skill and patience to make a few modifications. ( change out the connections to bullets, drill out the rivets in the old base and use small tap screws to re-set the new switch on the old base using the old top plate on the new switch.) You may have to attach the black horn contact wire to the old roller as the new roller may not hit the contact part of the steering wheel. A bit of work, but a lot less $$$ than what's out there at present. ( if it works. )
Here is one on Ebay:

This is a switch I bought for $45 a few years ago....correct except for the connectors.

Re: Turn signal switch replacement
What is it that goes bad in the original switches ???
Is it not possible to rebuild the stock switch when it goes ?
I mean, both my self-cancelling ears have broken off but at least I can operate the signals manually
Also, here is the same sm106 switch tx2step posted for 23 bucks less if anyone else is looking:

If it's not the return tabs, then most of the time it's the slide contacts under the top piece get worn down. Not easy to take that apart. The one you posted could possibly work as well.

Re: Turn signal switch replacement
I have the same issue. Mine is a 68 W100.
It is possible to find a NOS replacement but they are expensive. Also because they are old, the plastic and wires become brittle over time.
I decided to go with a Signal Stat 900. Its only about $50 and it is new. I am not doing a restoration so I did not like the idea of paying a bunch of money to put an electrical part thats over 40 years old in my truck.
I have not installed it yet as I just picked it up yesterday. I am under the impression that it can help to solve brake light and turn signal issues as well as flasher issued.
I will report after I put it in.
