fading lights

Post by slick »

I drove my "new" 66 for the first time at night a couple of days ago and noticed the lights fade in and out really bad...I swapped the voltage regulator from my 67 to the 66 and it worked for about an hour then started doing it again...Do I just need to buy a new regulator or is there possibly something else going on?thanks

:thinking I'd check and clean the ground strap between the engine and bolt on the regulator first .

hey slick, hope to meet up at freds. i had this problem on my 66 when i got it. this is what i did to almost eliminate it. remove all light housings (turn signals, and tail lights) and cleaned the housing and the body/grill where they bolted in and touched for ground. rear lights, added a ground wire sandwiched between the housing and body and run to the frame with a self tapping screw, one for each side. cleaned all connectors with electric motor parts cleaner and a wire brush where it would reach(head lights, tail lights, and turn sights). replaced motor to fire wall strap, moved it from the top of the valve cover to a manifold bolt, and cleaned the contact points on both sides. added larger battery ground cable bolted to engine block, and a secondary battery ground cable from the block to the frame, replaced VR with new one and cleaned the mounting surface on the fire wall to insure a good ground. while the front turn and rear light buckets were out, i cleaned them real well and repainted the reflective part with chrome bumper paint. replaced bulbs with halogen replacements. this left me with what was described by frank as trhe brightest tail lights he had ever seen on a sweptline, and very minimal fade at idle. due to rpm, and alternator design, your gonna get some fade at idle, but what i did totally eliminated the pulsing i was getting from the ligths at idle. :Thumbsup

I put a new voltage regulator on today and it seems to be ok so far...I cleaned where it mounts on the firewall and cleaned the ground strap...I guess cleaning all of the light sockets is also a good idea so I will do that next...thanks....I most likely won't make it to Wilcox this weekend, I'm probably going to set my cab on the new frame and start seeing exactly what I'm in for, but thanks for the invite....we will all have to meet up someday....I'm hoping to have my truck done by april for the Las Vegas Mopar show up there...Gives me a good excuse to go to Vegas and also hopefully enjoy my "new" ride...
