brake light

Post by aceaway »

Check this one. When the lights are off I get two rear brake lites and when I pull the lite switch I get two tail lites. But, when the lites are on I only get one brake lite, the others side looks like both tail lite and brake lite element is on. Is the problem in the head lite switch or a short in the wiring. Another thing is I don't get the blinker on that same side front or back. Thanks

The two systems are differant wires from the fuse block out, there crossed somewere, most likey in the wires somewere, brake/signal system does not run though the HL switch.
Though this is not directly connected to your problem, but may be part of it,
it is a good
idea to run a ground wire from the tail light buckets to the frame.
The bed were the tail lights are mounted sometimes looses ground
and will cause problems, like intermitent lights.

I had a similar problem yesterday. Try checking the rear light bulbs. If you've recently replaced one of them, the problem might be there. On mine, it turns out I replaced the rear (left) bulb with the incorrect bulb. I don't remember the part number off hand (1157 I think), but the correct bulb has dual fillaments. The wrong bulb (1156 I think) only has one fillament and thus one contact point. The incorrect bulb is the same physical size and fits into the plugs, but the single contact point is positioned just so it creates a short in the circuit between the two contact points in the bucket. Just changing the light bulb should do the trick if your problem is the same as mine was. Hope this helps.

If your having problems with the same side front and rear and your bulbs are the correct ones and good, then you need to look at the turnsignal switch. Chances are the switch is the culprit of the tail light/brake light problem also.
Don't forget to double check that you don't have a 1156 in were a 1157 bulb belongs. 1157 is a double contact bulb and the 1156 is a single contact bulb. Having a single contact bulb in a double contact socket will cause a back feed of current and do some of the straingest things like lighting lamps that shouldn't be on.

The turn signal switch could be a problem, there are a lot of problems
with the turn signal switch when it starts going bad, but I do not belive it is in this case here, the wiring needs to be checked from light bulb to switch frist
for cut, crossed, untaped, fray, splices, other weakness, and yes- the wrong bulbs and really may be only a grounding problem.
(as in other my other post) The wiring is 2 systems, one for the tail/running lights and one for the signal/brakes, from the fuse block out.
If one works fine when the other is off and you have problems only when
both are "on" it has to be a wiring problem and/or ground problem.
As with the other post that we just dealt with, he found he's problem
was wire that had been cut and were grounding to the frame.
