If it has ever been wired for a trailor plug? that is were I would start....
you may find if it has you are dealing with a rat nest of wires back there
were they are clipped into the harness or maybe in the plug itself.
Does it blow when you hit the brakes, use the trun signals or when you turn the lights on.

signals and brakelights still work, there is no trailer plug in on it(dosnt mean it didnt have one at one point in time). Could it be the headlight switch?

Since it is not in the brake lights, yes it could be the HL switch, but check
your wiring from the fire wall back to the tail lights before you get a new switch. Pull the tail light buckets too and check the wires there too.
Most of these trucks, at one time or anouther, pulled a trailer or had a camper of some kind. I'm willing to bet there is a 80% chance that back by the rear diver side frame rail you find wire splices. There is also the plate
light spliced into the tail lights wire back there. Nothing like cleaning up
someone elses mess.

Other places to check is the plug at the fire wall in the engine compartment. Look for the green corrosion in the plug. Another spot is under the dash. Look for a bare wire maybe fron a guage lamp or a radio back light wire that is chaffed.

Found the prob, teh previous owner had removed the side maker lights and left the wires dangle wher they rubbed thru the frame. Direct short when the lights were turned on! Did away with offending wire, split the dash harness open and replaced the smoked wire and everything works!
