group 24 sounds good to me. just make sure it has enough cold cranking amps to serve well. The old Polys will start in any temp if it has enough amps. Mine fired right up on a day it was close to 20 below zero!!

Do you guys think 750 cold cranking amps will be enough? I am in oklahoma so it does not get real cold but a select few days of the year.

I'd think that a 750 CCA battery would do just fine.

Actually the 318 don't need more than 650 Cold amps to start in winter and you can get that from a group 34, if you can't shut the hood on the group 24, but I saw Irish70 had the group 24 under his hood of a 70, so you should be ok, I have my battery in the bed on the passenger side of truck group 27, which is what comes out in the 90 and up Dodge Rams, but I have a 440 and I need the extra cold cranking amps here in Colorado where in the mornings when I'm trying to start it the temps could be below 0 :usa

Ditto, my trucks all have 950-1000 cca batteries. You can fit just about any battery in there, and most times the difference between 640 & 950is $5.

I just replaced my mine several months ago. I used an '01 CTD as the application and it's a big battery that fits perfect.

Well I have not bought the battery as of yet I think I am going to pick it up in the morning. I am just going to buy the highest CCA group 24 I can afford. once I get it installed it will be time to set my timing. and hopefully drive it the three blocks to the muffler shop to have my exhaust pipe welded.

Hola Andrew

Another way to look at the same battery question is to fit the largest battery that will fit in the battery box ( L x W). Then go for the power ratings.

I ended up getting a group 24 replacement with 710 CCA brand new for $45 from the local battery supplier. a co-worker who happens to work a second job (O'reilly auto parts manager) directed me to his supplier. With the mention of his name the battery was produced.
