Correct location of cigarette lighter wiring?

Post by DyeingSwan »

Hi there,

OK, the previous owner of my '67 D100 must have been some kind of radical separatist anti-smoker, because not only is the lighter socket missing, but there is no remaining wiring harness for it either. My reasons for reinstalling one are compound - though I'm not a smoker either, I hate looking at the empty hole in the dash, and also I have a boom box which can plug into a car lighter socket to supplement the nostalgic yet often unfulfilling AM sound.

I thought that where to plug in the harness would be obvious - alas, all the labeling on my fuse block has faded away or rubbed off except for the "HEATER" and "RADIO" labels in the upper right hand corner. Can anyone please tell me where the cig lighter wire's proper plug-in place would be? I know I could probably just splice it into the radio's supply line, but I want to stay as original as possible here (and minimize the crimping and soldering, too). Other info, if it's relevant - D100 Utiline, 4-speed manual trans, slant 6 motor.

Thanks,
Courtney

assuming it is the fuse block that you are talkin about,
which is were the wire for the lighter should come from.
it is on the same side as the heater radio, next in line is inst lights
then lighter in the corner

Speaking of Cigarette smokers, (I am not a smoker) :shame I was wondering, where is the ash tray on a 68? I don't have one, but, I have the cigarette lighter! There is some type of bracket under the dash, but I assumed that was for the AC. Where am I supposed to put my chewing gum wrappers? I suppose that when your ready to flick the ashes, just flick it out the vent window? I remember sitting behind my Dad in the back seat of our Chrysler how I would always get ashes blowing at me when he "flicked" them out the window! Ahhh! Childhood memories!

Should be under dash mounted to the right of the heater controls.
That is were they should be mounted 67/68, though the
67 still had the one under the dash pad on top of the dash were all the
earlier years had them, which was quite un-useable when they added
the dash pad to the passenger side, thus the move to under the dash. The lighter was often also mounted
on top of the dash to the right of the tray in the 66 and earlier trucks.

I found out something interesting about the cigarette lighter. Apparently it was actually an option, at least for '67 - so perhaps my beastie's previous owner wasn't the radical separatist I thought he was. It still doesn't explain the hole in the dash through which the cigarette lighter housing perfectly fit, though... that would stink if you got a dash with a big hole in it just because you didn't want to pony out for the lighter option. Anyway my lighter is now happily wired, thanks again to all for the help.

Yes, the lighter was a option that had to be ordered, so was the ash tray, from the factory and if it was not, the hole would not be in the dash for it, unless you ordered the dash with the hole and no lighter installed.
The list of factory options was endless on these trucks and if mopar
made it and it would fit you could order it from the factory, even some
options avalable on earlier models that had been discontued on the
currant model for that year, if they had the part and it would fit, they would install it. For some special orders there was a division that did just that, custom install non-standard special orders. Anything to keep a customer
happy and keep that customer coming back if they were willing to pay for
it.
