eletrical problem

Post by ozzie »

I have lost my tailights on my 69 W200 I bought a new trailer wiring harness to hook up the trailer that I made out of a 68 parts truck. I made all new connections and, all the other lights work, brake, directional, and emergency flashers, even the licence plate light works, but not the tailights. I have power all the way back to the lights. I have taken the complete tailight assembly out of the truck, and hooked it to my battery charger, and the tailights work. is there a possibly a fusible link I am missing. this has got me stumped. I may not be an electrical guru, but I do know how to hook up a wiring harness for a trailer, done it a few times before, and never had a problem. any suggestions would be appreciated, thaks, Ozzie.

The brown wire supplies the tail light function
so that is were I would be looking.

The others are yellow and green for the signals/brake/
flashers,
so it sounds like you got those hooked OK.

I would just start at the back with a test light
with the running lights on
and work my way forward till I found power
and go from there.....
could be a bad crimp/splice or bad wire...
No fuse/brake'er forward of the light switch,
at least not if stock.

After a re-read of post, you have power to both socket
contacts? but the bulb is not lighting?
could be a bad socket/ bulb or could still be a
grounding issue even if the other part of the system
is working. Replace the bulbs if you have not, run a
wire from the taillight bucket mount point to the frame or white wire in harness to the both bucket mounts.

If you do not have a test light, can be had for under
$5, get one, it will save you hours of head scraching.

I have also discovered that when I push the on brakes the left one lights, but the right one goes completely out, and when I turn on the directional signals both rear ones blink at the same time, but the front ones work correctly. I have decided to give up and take it to a professional. well that should burn about $150.00. Ozzie.

That's what it sounds like. Start troubleshooting from the front again.

Also, hows the ground? Try hooking up and extra.

Since it sounds like this started when the plug was installed--
That is were I would look frist, it could be were the
problem is, a wire out of place, or crossed, there would
cause that kind of thing.

I don't know when it started for sure. I can't remember the last time I went around the back of the truck to check the lights. before I take it in I might try starting fresh, and rewire the tailights without the brake or directionals. a little more work, but I just want to check what I wired before I go to a shop, and have him give me that look of what the hell were you thinking. Ozzie.

electric problem update.

Post by ozzie »

just got done taking the wiring harness off the truck. lo and behold, without the harness, all my lights are working correctly. don't know what the problem was, all I did was disconnect the harness without disturbing the rest of the wires and it all works. maybe the harness I bought has something wrong with it? at any rate I have all my kights working. Ozzie.

You might consider cleaning your bulkhead connector pins. If dirty, they might not be able to pass enough current to actually run that many lights (trailer included). Shot in the dark really.
