Electronic Ignition Swap

Post by SkyWriter »

Hi all, haven't posted in awhile, sorry. I recently changed from points to electronic ignition and the darn thing is running like :censored ! When I step on the gas hard it feels like it's being overwhelmed with fuel and keeps trying to catch up. I know I need to adjust the timing since the ignition is different but could it be that I just need to change to a hotter coil?

Need a little more info.....
Are all ing. parts new? cap rotor, wires.....
what type of kit are you using? MP, pretroinx,
wrecking yard parts and/or mixed with new?
If using a mopar system have you given the
EI box a good ground?
If using the MP kit, have you adjusted the
vacuum pod to zero?
If pertronix kit, are you sure your dist
was in good shape....
What is your timming set at? at idle 500 to 800
rpm, at 2000rpm...

what engine.....
and just by chance, did you install the dist
180deg out?
they will often run, but not very good

Ok #1 I just want to thank everyone who contributes to this site, it has become the BEST site any where in the world of sweptlines!!! :clap A happy 4th of July to all and most importantly to all the service men and women and their brave families! We love you all!!! #2 I think my problem has become a timing problem because of the fact that I can't time the sucker with a light!! I've had the cam reground for torque should that effect the timing? I'd think so but I'm not really sure. The conversion kit I used to swap it from points was the petronix (or something like that)kit. I've adjusted the timing (darndest thing)just a tad and it fires right off :Thumbsup . Still have problem with white smoke some times, most obvious when it is cold and under a load, compression is good. Could it be the carb? It's a Holley 500CFM 2bbl I bought with an adapater plate. Help anyone? Happy 4th!!!!!!!!!!! USA ROCKS!!!

1) even detuned the 500cfm 2v Holley is too large
for most engines unless your running wide open
most of the time. You may get away with it
on BUILT engine large c.i., but not on 318
or most under 400ci. All you will get
is poor fuel mileage and carboned up spark
plugs......

Other then the pertronix question your not giving me
much to go on. If there was a lot of shaft
wabbel then it may throw the timming out.

Have you tried to swap the dist 180?
if you cant time it will a light your
180 out or your engine damper has slipped
on the outside ring, or your cam is 180 out
(or your spark plug wire is not firing).

White smoke is normal at start up, white
smoke after warm up at wide open would tell me there
is a small water leak.

If it's anything like the Mopar kit, you will have to back the vacuum advance waaaayyy back to get it to run right. I couldn't get mine to time to save my soul. The damn thing wanted to full advance right at the hit of the throttle. And it ran way hot to boot. Not good on a fresh engine at all. Anyway, I checked the advance and found it was cranked all the way in! This was a new kit from Mopar. A few (hundred seemed like) turns and it's manageable now. Still likes to advance a little too far from time to time and I get pinging. I really need to take the time and tear it down and see what's making that happen. Too hot in the west right now (116) to stay too long in the shop even with a swamper running.
