I have an odd request regarding wiring.

As ya'll know the wiring on my 69 383 Adventure is in pretty bad shape from what I've mentioned here in the forum. When I first got the truck, the engine was sitting for about 4 years un-cranked. I was worried about it being weather seized, but after messing with it, I was able to get her to crank and she sounds ok. It's pumping gas (gas smells bad) but I'm not getting any power to cab at all (Due to the wiring) so the ignition is not working.

I'm wanting to try and get her to fire over so I can determine if the engine is salvageable before I spend money on other things. Can someone tell me a work around so I can get power to the coil? I have power to the starter so I can crack it but I need to know the best way to get power to the coil without frying the wiring even more. I'm sure there has to be a way to do this, I want to totally bypass the cab and ignition. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I would just use a jumper to the + side of the coil and + side of the battery. A wire with a couple of alligator clips ought to do it...DocProc

The quickest "quick and dirty" method would be to leave the key in the off position; make a jumper wire to go from the battery + to the coil + terminal. That would be the ignition system equivalent to having the ign switch in the "start" position. When you "short" the starter terminals to spin the engine it will fire. This method bypasses the ballast resistor and delivers 12v to the coil/distributer. You can run it this way for testing. The ballast resistor cuts the voltage down in the ign "on" position for running. If you run with it bypassed it shortens the points/condensor life.
***BE SURE*** if you do this to use an alligator clip or something similar on your jumper wire so you can yank it off to turn the engine off.

Also note that this does not energize the alternator/regulator charging circuit.

Thanks guys! Sounds easy enough. I wasn't sure if I needed to go through the voltage regulator or the bassist resistor. Sounds like a direct line will work for what I need! Thanks!!

I'll keep you posted! Hopefully that old gas will burn!

one more thing, make sure you got a fully charged battery as well. as mentioned it doesnt allow the charging circuit to work, so you will be running straight off the battery. and a weak battery will produce a weak spark, and might fool you into thinking the motor aint right when its just poor spark. :Thumbsup
