One wire alternator
As all of you have experienced this, the wiring is butchered on this 68 I just got. It seems to be isolated to the charging system, wrong alternator, voltage regulator I have never seen before, and the hot wire from the ignition switch is melted.
All that being said I'm thinking now is the time for an upgrade. What is the deal with one wire alternators? Where does the one wire go? Is there one that bolts in place of the stock alt? Is the output too high for the 68 wiring?
I'm old school so please educate me.

Re: One wire alternator
You could use a high output alt but you would have to install an appropriate charging harness under the hood and back feed into the dash with some under dash mods.. May be a bit involved. The stock wiring will not stand up to a high output if you feed through the stock charging circuit. Just my take on it.

Re: One wire alternator
My 68 engine came with a 10si alternator on it charging straight into the batt. I bypassed the ammeter per the madelectrical method. So far, no smoke.
I also did the GM HEI ingnition upgrade, which I recommend.

Re: One wire alternator
If you want to do a one wire alternator theres a few all it is the alternator has a built in regulator you just add one hot wire from the ignition to turn it on some will need a diode as they back feed and cause the engine to keep running. Then theres the self excitor style that has just the wire from battery as it revs up it charges on its own.Gm most stock cars use this style.Sounds like they tried using the amp meter wire off of the ignition switch to feed the power off the alternator .

Re: One wire alternator
I kept mine Mopar and got a high amp 146 alternator from a Durango for $25 at the u-pull yard. Works well and mounting it was pretty easy with a Mr Gasket mounting/adjuster arm. I did upgrade the hot wires from the alternator to the battery and had already done a Voltmeter conversion. I also protected the circuits with a 150amp fuse. viewtopic.php?f=34&t=25321&start=80

Re: One wire alternator
I've got my stock alternator into a shop that specializes in automotive electrical to convert it. They add a regulator to the alternator and it's one wire to positive battery.
I'm gonna run a new 10 gauge to the starter relay and the existing wires are taped off or removed. My signal wire (key hot from the ign. switch) was the one that was fried so it was clipped off at the firewall plug. I untaped the harness for inspection and eliminated the field wire. The 10 gauge black wire I coiled up and taped off the end.
Pix of the alternator/regulator soon as I get it back.

Re: One wire alternator
Who'd doing the conversion, Dennis in Puyallup? If so, I'm surprised, he wouldn't rebuild the round back stock unit from the 69 D100 I met up with you in.

Re: One wire alternator
So I grabbed an alternator off the shelf instead of taking the one off the truck. turns out I grabbed a three wire off a newer truck but I'm sure a two wire is no problem. Key off 12.6v and with it running 14.2 I'm gonna say the job is done.
