no back up light switch

Post by jdavis »

My 66 power wagon with 4 speed had no back up light switch when purchased. Is this the way they came from the factory???
I do intend to add that switch for safety purposes. Is it easy to add on?????

Does your truck have reverse lights on it?

A reverse light switch would attach to the
transmission. When you put the truck in
reverse, the reverse lights come on.

No it didn't have reverse lights. It has a diamond plate back bumper

My 65 D100 does not have a back-up light switch or back-up lights either. I added some "fog lights" to a switch next to my gear shifter so that when I am backing up and I think people need to know it (or I need to see where the "F" I am going) I flip them on. Just sayin... ;)

As I recall, '66 was the model year that reverse became
[or started to become...] regular equipment. If the box
on your truck is the one it originally came with and there
are no holes [wide Sweptline box] under your tail lights
for reverse lights, then I'd say it might have been assembled
in the early part of the '66 model year run :thinking We
could check your VIN to see about that. :study

From what I know, the reverse lights were part of the
New York State annual motor vehicle inspection beginning in '66.
This information was given to me by a local garage.
Perhaps you should check with your state DMV to see if
they're required on your truck. :2cents

Your truck has the Utiline box. If it was originally
equipped with reverse lights, they would have been
in the rear panel under the tailgate.

LOL THAT sir... is the idea. :)
Here is a pic of mine. I have a "window protector" of sorts that was welded onto the front of the bed before I got the truck and I just put "fog lights" on the side of it. They work AWESOME as back-up lights and as work lights while doing stuff in the bed... and of course... for pissing off tailgaters in the night.

i have added back up lights to rigs for years. you can find cheep fog lights anywhere. run a wire , add a switch that lights up when on, so you don't forget that light is on and P off drivers or the local LAW.

I installed the back up lights under the back bumper controlled by a switch on the dash board with a small light also on the dashbord so that I would not leave them on.

I agree with you both. The back-lit switch is the only way to go. ;)

I'm sure the problem is fixed by now, but i've heard that it's possible to install a pressure sensor in the transmission. specifically to the plumbing that engages the "reverse" gear. Is this possible or was i reading about somebody's super customized setup?

IIRC the reverse pressure switch is used on GM transmissions. The TFs have an internal contact.

Manuals have it on the shifter.

New York State is AFAIK the first state to mandate backup lights. I think it is required for the 1967 model year and forward. They also mandated rear window defrosters on cars a little later.
