Wiring up a ford starter relay.? 4 lugger.

Post by Cris »

Is this right, found it on the interwebz.?
snip//What you want to do is what i have done on my 69 Charger. Run the 1st mentioned setup, battery to big lug one side, big lug other side to starter big lug, and add a jumper wire from big lug starter to small one. That way you only have power to starter when the ford solenoid is activated.

I've got two big lugs, one from battery and one to starter, then two smalllugs one marked I for ignition (the orange wire.?) and then one marked S for I'm assuming the small wire to the small lug onthe starter...
I guess my question is what to do with the third biggish wire (red).? Which of the now two big lugs does it goto, I'm assuming starter side, but wth do I know.!

Cheers,
Cris

The third larger red wire (say 10 gauge?) is what probably powers the rest of the vehicle. It connects to the same lug as the battery feed cable.

assuming you are putting this on a dodge pu, why not just put a dodge starter relay?

then, there must be some other problem, other than the relay. common denominator. in the 28 years ive owned mopars, ive had to replace only 1 relay.

I've heard others say they have no trouble with them but I have owned Mopars since early '66 and have had some trouble with this relay to a degree on every one of them that I owned any length of time. I used to carry a screw driver to jump it when it wouldn't actually kick the starter.

Hi guys, thanks for the replies. I haven't gone with the Ford r.s.s. yet.

Kind of satisfied with my plan b of wiring in a remote starter button
and using the key to energize the circuit. The truck had a hole just the right
size in the dash valance anyways, so now I don't have to fill that in.

In several threads it was mentioned that the Dodge ones were 'dodgey' and that
several folks were running the Ford instead.

All I know for sure is that mine went out on day 4 of truck ownership and I grabbed the only one available
in a 50 mile radius and it wouldn't complete the 'whole' circuit
