New wheels and tires ( what size to get)

Post by HighDesertDodge »

Im going wheel shopping for my 63 crew cab. I want to put on a performance tire, wide with a low look.
Have been thinking about 305x45x20. Not sure if that will even fit. 20's are expensive also, so I may just go with some 17's like I put on my 88.
Anyway what have others used, and how large/wide can I go?
I will probably go with larger/wider in the rear. And as wide as I can in front and still turn.
I want this truck to look long and low. But I don't want to drop the suspension. Image

20s will fit, but you hae to make sure the width in the front is right. i have 17x8 all the way around, and the sometimes rub when turning...

We were going to put 305/75/16s on my '62 W100 but you would have to bend the lip on the front fender in. My truck has more ground clearance than the 2WDs and they still won't fit with out rubbing. I don't think 305s will fit, maybe 285s, at least that is what I got. :Thumbsup If you get lucky 305's might fit in the rear and 285s in the front.
:thinking
By the way I got 16X8 wheels and they fit in there perfectly and don't stick out much at all.

Yesterday I spent about an hour at the tire shop. We were calling manufactures and supply houses. I think I have decided on a set of wheels. I can't remember the brand right now, just the name of the wheel. (Dakar) The tire size will be, 305 x 50 x 20. The price?
Around $2500, Unless I puss out and throw my 17's off the other truck on it.

with a 20 youll get away with a lot wider tire up front then with a 16 or 17. the 20 will clear the tie rod, and allow for a wider rim and tire combo. mine had the biggest, 245/70/16 you can run up front for a while without any rub issues, but, it could have gone much more if i could have gotten past the tie rod end. right now i have 33/12.5/16.5 out back and they fit perfect on 10" wide rims.

I have 285 50 20 on the rear, but I went with a 285 560 18 on the front, and it is a tad tight, but 18's that are rated enough are hard to come by.
I am going to get the rears that are 305 50 20 when I can afford them, as they are 300 a piece, but I think they will barely fit, my rims are 20 by 10, and 18 by 9.5, they fit nice, just need a taller tire in the rear, pretty sad, my 2 wheel drive has 31.5's on the front and will have 33's on the back, sheesh.
