stuttering
Here is the whole story and hopefully someone has an answer for me. I took my '62 d100 to the local Firestone to have new tires put on. It had 235's on the front and rear and was a pain to steer. I went with 215's front and 235's rear. Dropped it off on Sunday and they couldn't get the 215's till Monday. I get a call about midmorning saying that they can't get the lugs off on the right front, the lugs just spin. I asked them if they were trying clockwise or counterclockwise because those threads are revesed on the earlier Dodges. I called Monday evening to see if it was done and they tell me that one of valves was oversize and they didn't have that size valve. Callled on Tuesday evening and was told that they had stripped two of the lugs and couldn't find any left handed threads, said they would replace the two and I said why not replace all the lugs. They said they would cover the two and not the others and I said the lugs were fine when they received the truck. Needless to say they replaced all the lugs no cost, gee thanks.
After all this here is my question, when I brake now the front end stutters or chatters. What could be causing this? Mike

since the front lugs are swedged in, holding the
drum to the inside of the hub, I would be looking
at their work for sure
In order for them to install the new lugs
they had to pull the hub off, maybe they
did not get it set back on the spindle right...
it should freely spine but have no play
in or out- up or down.....
If the brake shoes got some oil on them it
also could cause problems...

i will bet money on this one....any takers??????
what happened, as jeff said, the lugs are swedged in place. when you remove the old lugs, and swedge in the new ones you change the drums center line in comparison to the hubs. any time you change all the studs, you HAVE to turn the drums to get everything centered back up right. id also be checking to see if they swedged them, or just slid the drum back over the studs they pressed in to the hub only.

3 of us saying the same thing, because we have seen it happen, it doesn't matter how many times you tell them that they are "LEFT HANDED THREADS" they just can't get it take the tire off and see if there is any play with the drum???

on my 66 i got tired of dealing with the idiots, so i swapped everything over to right hand thread. went thru 2 rotations without a stud break. then one day i rolled up, and of course didnt say a word. but i got a guy who knew mopar. 2 studs later he comes in asking if i had swapped studs. wasnt funny then, but i get a chuckle from it now.
dodge dog, just have the drums turned, as long as they arent lose on the studs, id bet good money thats your only problem.

studs
I remember reading about swapping to right hand studs on our trucks and a warning about using a stud that had to much shoulder at the base which didn't allow the wheel to sit right.I think the article was on one of the sweptline websites.I'll look and see if I can find it.

i had that problem on my crew cab when i swapped to aluiminum wheels. the steel wheels have that slight taper on the back that the alum didnt. but that causes the truck to vibrate all the time, not just when the brakes are applied.

your probably partially right robin. the studs would have to be pressed in, or they would have never got the lug nuts on. but the liklyhood they were reswedged is low. takes a machine shop to do that work, and its not cheap. check and see if they re swedged, if not, get them done and turn the drums. if they did by chance swedge everything back like it was supposed to be, then just turn the drums. it is a slim to 0 chance they put the drums back on EXACTLY how they came off. and any variance will give you the studder when you apply the brakes. once the drums are turned, and trued to the hub, the studder will go away.

I appreciate all the responses. Took it back to Firestone and had it out with the manager. Gave me the usual excuses, young kids didn't know what they were doing, he was on vacation, yet never a sorry. Seems they got most of the stutter but something still doesn't seem right. I'm going to take it to Best Brakes, they have older mechanics who seem to know their way around older Mopars.
