I noticed Wednesday while greasing my trucks, while not measuring, it seems that the spindle on the 83 D150 mounts with almost the same distance between the top and bottom as the spindle on the 70 has on the straight axle, basically I need to take a tape measure and check it but looks almost as if the spindle from the 83 could be mounted on the straight axle, what an easy Disc brake conversion that would be

I'm taking the dog for a walk, (chase rabbits) then will take tape measure and camera down to the trucks and do some comparisions, I've also wondered if the Spindles are the same size???? or if they are the same diameter then could just change everything over possibly the 83 Spindle could be longer which would be needed for the new rotars

that would be the easy part trey, wouldn't need the ball joint, take it off and mount on kingpin just like the original, be right back with pictures of measurements.

ok, now im confused. i have disassembled numerous front ends. never have i seen a ball joint style spindle that would mount on a king pin style front end. unless your planning on removing just the spindle itself, i dont see how your gonna do it. and as far as i know, its one big casting.

Here are some pictures of the measurements, its not a direct bolt in, I can't believe how small everything is on these trucks, the swap could be done with some engineering. thats the difference on the newer 83 spindle mountingAnd here is the little straight axle even though the 83 is twice as wide between top and bottom it could be engineered to fit but its not the direct bolt in I was looking for

the straight axle is only 3" tall, the distance on the 83 spindle is 6", so there would have to be space problem, so not the direct bolt on I was hoping for

I believe the '83 has a taper also for the balljoint to rest in.

I've wondered about the F series straight axles from the Pooper Duties, I mean Super Duties. But without even taking a tape to it, I'm sure they are too wide to bolt the whole thing in. But.... I'm now wondering about just the spindle.

spindle
have ya'll seen the 95 and up Dodge 3500 straight axle's??? I drove one while I worked for the auto detail bussiness when I came to Colorado, it has stuck in my mind and could be used on the Sweptlines and another way to drop them , I'm referring to the arms that come off the straight axle, no leafs, that along with airbags, or less expensive route of springs to drop them
