In regards to changing the passenger left hand lugs out with right hand ones, what is the best way to do this without removing the rear axles?

Do I just hammer them out and press the new ones in by tightening a lug nut onto it? That was my idea? Is there enough room to get old lug out and the new one in.

Thoughts?

that works, ive done it a bunch of times on both 100 and 200 axles.

I have never done it on the early axles but that should work
as long as the studs don't turn as the nut tightens

That's the way I always did it. A big hammer to get them out and if needed a couple washers to take up any space between the nut and hub to put them back in. If all else fails, after you get them mostly in place, put an old rim on the hub and tighten away!

scott, that works on the rear, but i would use an impact wrench to snug them quick before they can turn. hand tighten them till the pressed fit area is centered, by the way, put the lug nut on with the flat side to the hub, not the tapered side, and with a washer between it and the hub, then hit it with the impact wrench. 9 times out of 10, it will bite in quick enough to not turn.

on the front, depending on what truck your working on (you should be more specific when you own 6), the drums are pressed to the hub useing the lug studs. to change them requires a machine shop with a big press. the stud is actually flared at the base by the press, thus holding the drum tight to the hub.

Unfortunately I don't have an impact gun let alone a compressor. I have to hand wrench all my stuff. no place to put a compressor... LOL I have Swepts in all the available corners of my home!!

I'm not sure which one I'm going to do just yet. First I'm going to see if I can't find some left hand thread lug nuts. I know they sell the standard lug nuts in left hand thread, but I need the ones that are real long and when installed on the lug they actually go into the rim itself. I doubt they sell those, but you never know... Reason... I bought another Sweptline over the weekend and I'm kind of out of room around here... I need to get my dads 65 Utiline in the back yard and covered up. Then move the red 69 out of the garage and put the OTHER 69 I just bought in the garage!

I need to get the bean slot mags on one of them!

i know a guy with an impact gun and a compressor... lives right around you, sort of... Fort worth area if I remember my address correctly. Please, oh please tell us number 6 is a runner. And how the hell did all this get past the missus???.... not to mention all of us on the boards here.

left handed thread mag wheel lug nuts are not available, thus my choice to have aluminum wheels that have conicle lug seats for regular lug nuts. i searched high and low and never found any. not even anyone who could order them for me. mr. gasket used to make them, if you are lucky you might find an old set on some speed shop shelf somewhere. but they havent been in new production for many years. i had 4 out of a 5 pack that was found at the local speed shop, the package was so old, you could barly read it cause it was so faded.

I got left handed lugs from these guys. They're standard lugs, not for mags, but they work!

I had no problem with left hand thread lugs for my old mags.
America's Tire order mine in for the wheels on my Belveder
and the old American Tork Thrusters on my 66, though I'm
sure that some types of lugs are not made LH thread.

NAPA p/n 735-2147 are chrome left hand lug nuts. They are cone type with same taper as stock, and cover the entire stud. I've got them on my truck.

I appreciate the help guys, I'm going to stop by America's tire (Discount Tire CO.) and see if they can't order me some.

These lug nuts do not have a recess at the end, they actually go into the rim and tighten against the drum itself.


As for the truck... Well some of you were looking at it and I didn't want to be a *&#$%@ and start waving it around the forum that i was the one who got it.

I picked up a 1969 D100 Adventure 383, 3:23, Auto, PS, PB, A/C, Orig Tach in the dash and four gauge cluster. I'll post some pics when I get it home.. Shooting for a Saturday Pick up..

Went and busted the studs out of the rear axle no problem. Installed the new ones.

I got to the front and totally hosed up one of the drums. I have two spare drums , so I'm not real concerned. I totally forgot what you guys said about them being pressed on. One came out nice and easy, the second.. well I screwed it up LOL

Now I have to find a machine shop...hmmm I don't know if any here in Dallas. I guess to the phone book I go.
