1972 D500 front brake parts

Hello everyone, first post - trying to help a friend find parts for his 72 D500 flatbed (canadian delivery vehicle apparently). Used the front brakes, and then they went down the toilet. Upon removal and inspection, all the hardware fell out and was completely shot. Was able to buy new wheel cylinders from NAPA but missing a few critical parts. Currently searching for the pins that extend from the wheel cylinders, as well as the shoe hardware kit with cable. Is this something I will be able to find locally, or are there part numbers that I can search up/cross reference from other vehicles that would work?

I have FSM for 1974 & it might have some useful numbers. I will check it & post my findings here in a few hours.

Well I wasn't able to find out anything. No parts numbers & just a couple of diagrams that I wasn't even for certain were for your particular front axle.

I believe your D500 shares the same front brake components with the D600 & S600(school bus) provided they are 6 stud Budd style wheels & not the Dayton style.

Here are a few specs just for reference. I know it's not what you were looking for. Keep in mind these are for 1974 & may not apply to 1972. The cabs switched. The steering box location switched. I am not sure what changed concerning the actual running gear.

Drum is 14"x2.5", make is Bendix. Duo-servo, single wheel cylinder per wheel. Cylinder bore is 1.063", front shoe arc is 111 degree, rear shoe arc is 123 degrees. Thickness is .258"

You may ask over on ramchargercentral, either of the power wagon sites or possible look at what Ford folks say, as sometimes their F600 used similar if not identical components on medium duty truck axles.

These medium duty trucks were most common in the midwest, as grain trucks. Some are still being used today.

I have a 70 D500 and found all my brake parts at a Medium/Heavy Duty truck parts supplier. Dodge was not the only one to use those brake systems.

Its the 5x8 lug pattern - we tried taking them to a heavy truck place and they were no help. I believe there is a motor home that has a disk axle that swaps, but the extent of my knowledge is that it exists and nothing further.

The rear end is a big ol square tube thing though. Im not totally sure what axles are under this.

I agree. 400 series are 5 lug and my 500 is 6 lug. The 5 lug 400 series are an abnormality.

this will be great when we redo the pads, but the wheel cylinders are shot, all the hardware rusted and fell apart. Need that stuff first

Patrick66 on this forum recently redid the brakes on a 300 series truck and said it was not cheap. Maybe you could PM him about where he sourced his wheel cylinders from. Hopefully the company would be able to come up with D500 brake parts.

In your first post you said you got new cylinders from Napa. Now you say they're shot. Which is it?
Is it a 5 lug axle or 6 lug? If its 5, it is NOT a D500 axle!
I had no problem finding all the same stuff for a 2 ton IH axle 2 years ago.

its the 5x8 lug pattern - we have wheel cylinders for the front in a box, but doesnt mean I dont need more - need good reliable sources. Shoes, spring kit, seals, the rust claimed a lot of things. I know the shoes are 2 inches wide.

The 72 medium duty brochure lists a 5 lug wheel as standard for a D500 and a 6 lug as optional.
