Steering and king pins
Steering and king pins
I have a 68 d300 that I got from an auction in town. I've been tearing the front end and rear end apart all winter, little at a time. I ordered a set of Moog 8454n king pins and they are about 10-12 weeks out, maybe more. The tie rod ends are really throwing me for a loop also. Are they different, right from left? Or are they able to be used on either side? I have a few days till the other parts are fully painted and dried. Thanks for any help

Usually the tie rod ends are different - left hand threads and right hand threads.

Are the drums hard to find? Or they just cost an outrageous amount?

Virtually unobtainable. Depending upon your budget, you can get the drums relined with a superior material. Last I looked it was about $400 a pop.

I have a guy who I'm going to have look around. He said the dana 70 is a common rear end and he knows a few places to get stuff for older vehicles.

Good luck with that! I've still got 8 of those axles here, some loose and some in trucks that I've had 40 yrs. They aren't as common as you are being led to believe, unless you are counting all the used and worn out ones too.

Re: Steering and king pins
The axle differential & housing were "common". The hubs/drums/brake components are not.

Re: Steering and king pins
So I received an email yesterday. That lady that wrote it said the Moog is not making the king pin kit that I already paid for. So she apologized and refunded me. Is there another kit I could look up?

Re: Steering and king pins
I honestly can't say. Dodge stopped using that leaf spring king pin front suspension in 1971. I don't know what varied within the 100-200-300 series, or the larger trucks.
You may want to check with a company that services big rigs. They won't have the parts but likely deal with the vendors who might, or have a way of looking up what you need.

Re: Steering and king pins
A quick eBay search turned up a Moog King Pin Repair Kit #8454N for 83.68 and free shipping. ebay item #384895827115 Says they have 2 available.
If this doesn't pan, eBay has a search option where they will notify you when an item is listed with your parameters.
Before the advent of the internet, the go to resource for finding out of production parts or supplies was Hemmings Motor News. Likely that could be as viable an option for you nowadays as it was in the past.
