Electric Power Steering install

I assembled everything and set it next to the factory column. Looks about right, hopefully it fits in the truck.

I cut the bracket off of the steering motor control box and found a good spot to mount it. I mounted the controller on the top of the pedal box behind the gauge cluster. Ran the motor wires up through the pedal box (like the brake switch wire and turn signal wires) to the controller. I tapped the small 12 volt wire into the accessory taps on the back of the gauge cluster and the grounds to the top of the pedal box. For the main power feed, I ran a 60amp Maxi fuse off the starter relay and 8ga wire into the cab and to the controller.

Installing the column went pretty smooth. Installed just like the factory one would, although it is heavier, a little hard to hold in place while installing the mounting hardware and bolts. Earlier I mentioned the shaft telescoped up into the bearing, here is where I ran into a problem. I couldn’t get the steering wheel installed once I put the spring on the shaft. This is because you have to push down on the wheel to compress the spring to install the nut on the steering wheel. When I would do this the shaft would push into the column, and I couldn’t get the nut on. I tried a couple options, but nothing worked. I ended up disassembly the whole column and installing a spacer inside the telescoping shaft to prevent it from pushing into the column. Then everything went back into the truck pretty quickly.

Here are some installed pictures. It is pretty well hidden considering it’s size. I think painting it black helped with that. You cannot even really see it from the driver’s seat.

What a great 'how to"! Pretty darn affordable power steering conversion, as well. However, it does seem a bit of a blasphemy installing something Toyota on a Dodge.

True, but I wont tell if you wont! I probably have less that $300 in parts to make it happen.

Before my PS conversion, I looked into electric. For some reason, I thought I needed a 3/4-ton specific unit. Too bad I didn't follow up. Great install, great idea. I hope it serves you well.
