Hi Guys--
I have a warning, some information and a question.
--I recently bought a set tires, had them mounted and installed on my truck. As I looked the truck over after paying for the service I noticed that several lug nuts were driven right through the rims enlarging-the-rim through holes and removing the taper. When I pointed the damage out to the business the manager he admitted their mistake. My previously very nicely painted, rust and pit free rims are ruined. The owner's manual says to torque the lug nuts to 65 - 85 lbs. The shop's impact driver must have been adjusted to a much higher value. Next time I'll provide the lug nut's torque value to the tire business before they work on the truck.
I spent some time looking for complete '71 D100 rim information on the forum and the net but didn't find a find a full description of them. So I measure the rims and here's what I came up with: diameter = 15", width = 5.5", bolt pattern 5 x 4.5", back-spacing 3 3/4". I'm not sure what the OEM white rim color is, there seem to be two choices: White and bright white. Can someone confirm this information for me?
Thanks,
WisD100

Re: '71 rim size and color
I went to Discount Tire once. Never again.
Were the damaged rims on the left side? The left side wheel studs are LH thread. They probably didn't realize it and when they were thinking they were loosening them, they were actually tightening them.

Re: '71 rim size and color
The parts manual confirms all of your measurement except offset and color. It doesn't provide information/specifications on either. The wheel part number is 3004989. It was also utilized on the full size passenger cars that were equipped with 15" wheels in the same year.

Re: '71 rim size and color
Hi Martin--
I carefully measured one of my truck's rims and the spare and recoded the backspacing number which also matches backspacing information I found at the rim manufactures so it should be correct. Regarding the color, I searched the net for 1971 Dodge D100 color information. I found several sources that said Dodge had two whites in '71, white and bright white. Wheel Viniques mentioned that their Bengal White is a very near match to bright white.
Thanks for your help,
--John

The service manual lists paint color names and codes, also.

1971 paint chip charts at https://www.hamtramck-historical.com/pa ... s-01.shtml so you can compare the white on your wheels to those.

Hi sixpak340--
I compared '71 Dodge color charts to the powder coating options available on new rims. Brite White seems the closest but I'm prepared to repaint the trim to match the rims if it comes to that.

Re: '71 rim size and color
Paint and powder coating can both chip. Powder coating chips can be much larger though.....
Wheel weights, hub caps. etc. can all cause damage.
Paint chips are much easier to repair than powder coating chips.
