Spare Tire Carrier Rod
Spare Tire Carrier Rod
Can anyone provide a photo of where the 9-1/2" long spare tire carrier threaded rod "hooks" to on the frame? I'm installing a used carrier with a NOS rod and wing nut on my 1967 D100 long bed to replace the original carrier that has long been missing in action. This is the rod that I'm referencing.
Thanks,
Mike.....
Thanks,
Mike.....

Unfortunately, that factory design has a serious flaw. The weight of the tire pressing down on the wingnut, coupled with vibrations and pounding while driving, causes the wingnut to slowly loosen. It doesn't have to move very far until the spare pops out and you lose it on the highway. I lost 2 within a yr of getting my first W200 in 1978. A second jam nut run up against the wingnut stopped that loosening defect. Also added a rod thru a lug hole of the rim running thru a hole drilled in the carrier with a locknut on it so the tire couldn't fall out no matter what.

PwrWgnDrvr, thanks for the heads up. I'll make sure to add the redundant jam/lock nuts to ensure that the tire stays securely in place.

I had thought of that.... NOTE the hairpin clip that I put in the end of my J bolt. Sure, it's small, but it was all I had at the moment.PwrWgnDrvr wrote: ↑Fri Mar 05, 2021 10:48 pmUnfortunately, that factory design has a serious flaw. And in my 66 W100 the spare has been up under truck since the 80's. Better check it to see if it still holds air.
My truck is younger than me.

Maybe I will have to try. It will probably unscrew as I would have put anti seize on the threads.

Re: Spare Tire Carrier Rod
Thanks for the photo. It now makes sense. I'm missing the bracket that the rod "hooks" into. I'll fabricate a 2" wide bracket out of 2"x2"x1/4" angle iron and possibly secure it by piggybacking off the 7/16" bolt that mounts the bed to the frame. Hopefully that should do the trick. I'll post a picture once I get everything installed.

Re: Spare Tire Carrier Rod
Ditto the thanks to PwrWgnDrvr! I drilled my thread rod, just below the wing nut, and inserted a hairpin clip, yesterday.

Re: Spare Tire Carrier Rod
Finally obtained all the parts. Installed the spare tire carrier with a new P215/75R15 new tire and existing rim from the old spare tire that had been laying in the bed of the truck. Thanks again for the lessons learned on how to ensure the wing nut stays retained on the threaded J hook.

Re: Spare Tire Carrier Rod
You may want to give some thought to flipping your spare on to the other side. I have mine with the valve stem side down and the valve stem at the rear most position. In this manner, I can check the tire pressure and add inflation pressure easily.
