What rear axle

Post by Volksnut »

Okay I have a '63 D100 with the tapered axles, so I bought a '65 D100 rear axle for the e brake, but it has passenger car brakes? It has a tag with 3.55 which I know is the gear ratio. What rear axles do the D100's have, is it the 8 3/4"? How do you tell. If I want to change the brakes to discs or say just your average 8 3/4" brakes (if the 8 3/4 is what I even have) do the passenger car and trucks brakes interchange????

All D100's have the 8 3/4 axle, 66 FSM says 11x2 drums. No other options.

Okay just making sure,I knew about the 11 x 2 as mine are 10 x 2 1/2 which I guess someone swapped the brakes on from a car. I asked a few vendors if there disc kits fit the Sweptline trucks with replays like "I don not know. It only fits the 8 3/4 or Dana 60 rear" and "none, we do not have a setup currently", so are the truck 8 3/4" different from say the passenger car 8 3/4" as far as fitment.

I bought a 8.75" corporate axle from a '71 D100 Slant 6/727 out of a local boneyard.
It has 10" brakes/drums. Maybe you can locate some backing plates and brake drums.
The 10" drums are still available through most parts stores the last I knew. :study :thinking

Anything from the car brakes 8 3/4 will work. Disc Brake conversion or drum. Think the 9 1/4 stuff also fits.

What is the axle width drum to drum face. What is the spring pad width and are they on the top of axle tube. A picture would help.

I believe this is correct. I had an early I think 73/74 D100?that had the 8 3/4. That was about the time Mopar stopped with that axle. I also think the brakes are correct and still available. If you’re going to disk, than any kit for an 8 3/4 will work. Use it..,better than tapered. You just have to size rear disk correctly based on front disk size. The width leads me to think it’s 70-74. That’s my 2 cents. Craig

Craig, were the axles wider in '70? If so how much. Im going to keep the drums since there correct for the axle.

One of the smart guys will chime in but, I read somewhere that the 72-93 were the same width. If yours is 64" drum face to drum face and you measure the tapered axle, you will find its slightly narrower. make sure you measure the drums and shoes, because no telling what got changed in 40-50 years. Nothing wrong with drums as long as you can get parts.

Wouldn't it be more logical to measure backing plate to backing plate?
11x2 drums would be narrower than 10x2.5 but either could be installed on the same axle.....

Any rear diff from 61 to 93 will bolt in excluding minor issues. But some are not desirable. :thinking :thinking
