Scarebird Bracket Issue reminder

Post by my5thmopar »

I posted this since I've seen a few recent threads about this conversion. I was trying to resolve a strange rattle from a dead stop. I checked all the suspension and steering components for tightness. Nothing found. While researching the issue, I ran across several threads from others about the brackets and/or pads needing to be modified for clearance. Well what do you know...I took mine apart today and neither L/R pad would clear the brackets. The sound was being caused by the pad binding with the bracket and rotor. I also had issue of the truck pulling hard or locking up the RH brake intermittently. Anyway, hope this helps someone else. Craig

Can you post a picture of what you found regarding the location the pads wouldn't clear the bracket and rotor?

Thanks,

S1U

There are several threads on here. I didn't take a picture but, search and look at this picture from @slick. Its an older thread but, I think you will get the idea.

Yes, I had seen that earlier but thanks for the reminder. I did some grind some on my pads at installation so hopefully this isn't an issue for me. However, I not only do not see a "gain" in braking since the Scarebird install, I have noticed a loss in braking efficiency. I'll pull my wheels off and have a look. It may be that I didn't remove enough material.

I have to agree. My manual drum brakes would throw you through the windshield. Now I have power and Scarebird and less aggressive braking. Don't get me wrong, the truck stops smooth and I like the less leg effort but, not like drums. I haven't had a chance to test since the repair. I'm dealing with a leaking axle right now. I'll report back. Craig

The kind of braking for which discs matter is when the brakes are already hot, such as when carrying a heavy load going downhill or towing a trailer without brakes. Drums grab just fine, but can fade when they get hot.

No engine braking on a diesel w/o an exhaust brake installed.
