Brand new slave cylinders are leaking!

Post by Snowdog »

I replaced the cylinders all around...brand new units. Now, the front cylinders are leaking as I try to get pressure and bleed.

In putting in new cylinders on manual adjust brakes, are there any tricks from old timers to avoid this kind of annoyance?

Have never seen that problem and can't picture any reason for it to happen with unworn drums and shoes.

Especially when it comes to elastomers. Their chemical technolgy process control sucks, big time

Bad luck dude.
Where did these leaky cylinders come from, or what BRAND were they?
Thanks, I hope to learn from your misfortune.

They were Raybestos, and I bought them from NAPA...figured they'd be better quality.

Wow, Raybestos from NAPA, that is surprising.
Thanks for the info.

is it leaking on the back side where the hose attaches to the wheel cylinder, or inside the cylinder past the cups?

Past the cups. I just threw on two new cylinders. We'll see how this goes.

If it were me, I'd purge the whole system with alcohol and replace the fluid with DOT 5 silicone.

I would buy new rubber cups only. Napa has them or can get them. they tend to still be made in the USA. They don't leak. you cant buy american made brake parts anymore excpet for aftermarket disc stuff or modern dealer parts
