Tapered to Flanged swap...Differential needed?

Post by Snowdog »

Is it possible to switch the axles from a pre '64 to a post '65 type without switching out the diff?

Thanks!

Just the axle. Nope. Early has nut on axle. Later is bolted through flange. I’m replacing my 64 now. Craig

Thanks Craig. Is there a step by step guide I can get a hold of?

Clarify what you're asking. If you replace the entire differential, get a manual. You have to disconnect brake lines, drive shaft, parking brake, leaf springs, install new diff, bleed brakes etc. Take out old put in new assembly. Get a mechanic buddy to help, pretty much basic operation. Now if you want to rebuild one, then there are specialized tools needed and not for the inexperienced. :2cents
