68 D400 Power steering conversion

Post by 520Swepty69 »

I have searched the forums before posting and read a few posts stating the D400 uses a totally different box than my D300 and D100's. I also saw someone stated they saw a conversion using an 81 D200 steering system please post pics if possible. I am building a hybrid of sorts using a 1976 Dodge motorhome front and rear axles my reason is it's an easy way to upgrade to full hydroboost brakes and disks in front as well as the 19.5 tubeless rims the steering looks almost identical so at this point I think my only hurdle is a possible custom drag link and some kind of power steering box. I can steer this truck fairly well but my wife loves this thing but she can't quite steer it well enough to be confident.Any help is much appreciated.

I would suggest a PS Box ahead of the axle. Common for many makes of trucks in all size ranges. My 66 W 100 uses a 76/77 W series box mounted ahead of axle with a custom shaft to modified stock steering column.
My truck is younger than me.
66 W100. 70 D 500 , 69 Hiab Speed Loader. 96 Ram 3500 Club Cab Cummin's 5 spd. 97 Ram 1500 Club Cab 5.9 gas auto. 83 W200 LB Propane 360 auto 09 Yammy Rhino 700.

Any idea what trucks would have had a 76/77 W Series box? I am not familiar with that term. Would I be correct to assume this would be a saginaw box on a Chevy from the 70's and the W means 4X4?

W means a Dodge 4 wheel drive truck. D means a 2 wheel drive Dodge truck. I used a 72 to 77 Dodge W series. I cannot confirm a GM Box application will work because I only collect Dodge/Fargo parts. You need to think outside the box. What worked for me may not work for you.

what about using the MH power steering set up? the D400 is a medium duty set up and uses a massive power assist ram style PS. very rare. it was also used on the 61 to 71 W300 also very rare. only seen one
