Converting 67 Dodge D300 from manual to power steering

Post by 67D300flatbed »

I have a 1967 Dodge D300 1-ton flatbed with 318 engine and would like to convert it to power steering. Has anyone done this and do you have any advice? New power steering pump is available thru NAPA. Both pulleys on my 318 are set up for a 2nd belt. Starting from scratch and don't know much about power steering. I'm guessing that I may need a set of parts from a parts truck. Where should I start?

I'm pretty sure p/s was never a factory option on a D300. If it was, Ive never seen it in 40+ yrs of owning, driving, buying, photographing and parting these trucks.

I don't know how much difference there is in the 300 box vs the 100 and 200's? Your most likely going to have to custom fit something, unless you can use a kit like CPP or similar. Also might be some differences in pitman arms too?

I think the 300 steering boxes were Gemmers and I don't think
they can be rebuilt. Bud Thorp can confirm this or add the
correct information....

The 100/200 boxes were Saginaw mfgd.

Yes, my 300's have Gemmer boxes, NOTHING like the 100/200 trucks and the drag links are way different too.

Thank you all for great information. My Dad used this truck to haul firewood when he lived in Reno, NV. I'm restoring it to be used a functional truck. The body work and much of the mechanical work is done. It drives okay but steers hard. Sounds like I can stop looking for original power steering parts since it was probably never offered with power steering. Has anyone in the forum done a non-stock power steering conversion on a 67 D300 or truck with my steering components? I plan to keep the truck and it would drive so much better with power steering.

Ive put over 100,000 miles on my 62 W300 without p/s. You'll get used to it.
I saw an aftermarket system installed on a D700 boom truck in Alaska 15 yrs ago. I can't remember the system name, but its a commonly used system, similar to the factory system.
Or, u can enroll at a gym and get an Armstrong system.

Unlike the W300, the D300 used the same Saginaw steering gear as the D100/200. It uses a pitman arm and drag link unique to the d300. I had a 67 d300 with factory (Bendex) power steering.
I sold all of my sweptline trucks, except the invisible one. I just couldn't stand to see it go!

I have a D300 PS assist set up. the D300 shared the same box configuration as the 100 and 200 trucks but not sure the PS system would be the same. I think there are at least 3 models of box that bolt in the same.

the W300 mounts differently and uses the medium duty truck box and a much larger PS assist set up.

Thank you all for your help! I purchased a complete setup minus the pump from a member. Does anyone have a pump assembly and mounting bracket to sell me? The engine in my 1967 Dodge D300 is a 318, engine block # 2536559.
