71 D100 Spare Tire Mount

Post by jaybird88 »

Has anyone fabricated a spare tire x-bar for the 71 D100?

If you have any pictures of your existing spare tire setup for under the bed, that would be great!

Thank you!

Why don't you just buy one? A lot easier than making one.

I hate the tubular X-bar. I plan on making one similar to that on my '67 held up by a couple of threaded rods into the frame.

I like the original Spare Tire carrier. Way easier to install wheel into it when alone than the single bar style in the 72 and up trucks. :clap :clap :clap

As is your right. In my work, that flimsy 3/8 rod bent so many times it's broken more than once. I've left the spare on one of my dirt roads a half dozen times. Once the tire rolled down one of our insanely steep hills and I had to go get it. Of the 4 trucks I've owned, two of those tubular hangars were bent. The one on my '67 was a simple cross bar of channeled steel with bottom flanges hanging on 1/2" rods with much more force (I've moved it to the Green Truck). It hinges on one end. To my mind the leverage necessary to get the tire into it is better.

I like it. Given that I'll be making something similar out of 1 X 2 tube steel, I'll put the hinge point higher as well as the clamping surface. That will leave less of a head banger hanging down under the truck to catch on logs and brush when fully loaded.
