Brake and axle upgrade options

Post by Tony292 »

I love my 71 D200 but hate my front drum brakes and funky reverse threads on one side of the truck. Also not a fan of the smallish lug nuts and studs that don’t fit well with modern wheels.

So I’ve looked at the scarebird and ram man conversions and it seems like ram man is the only option with 8 lugs.

The ONLY reason I’d rather have five as it opens the options for 15 inch rims but the ONLY reason I want to do that is many options for drag radials in 15s, otherwise I don’t like the 5 lug idea as it is weaker. And I would have to purchase new axleshafts drilled for a 5 bolt pattern for the Dana 60. I do have an 8 3/4 from a d100, but again that would be weaker than the Dana 60.

If I do go with the idea of keeping it 8 lug I can easily buy aftermarket wheels but I’d want to have the rotors and axleshafts drilled out for larger and standard threaded (non reverse) studs/nuts.

Looking for advice and what other have done.

This will be about a 500-600 hp 440/727 build for street and occasional strip use.
