OEM style16"tires for '65 D100 pickup

Post by PickupPete65 »

I have a set of OEM 16" wheels for my '65 D100 pickup and would love to finally put tires on them and on the truck. Research turns up more questions then correct solutions. For instance, supposedly a modern radial equivalent should not be used on OE rims because that would be unsafe. A solution to that problem is to use radial inner tubes, but radial inner tubes are supposedly very expensive and getting harder to find. Coker brand tires are available but besides being very expensive, other tire people/mechanics are reluctant and /or won't even mount/install them...So any reasonable, sensible suggestions anyone? Thanks...

Are you talking about standard one piece 16" steel wheels? :thinking

As long as the wheel has a modern safety bead profile, you shouldn't have a problem with modern radials.

As BigJinG said, you should be able to put a nice radial tire on those wheels.
I'm not sure what the ideal size should be? :thinking I do know that the
235/75/15 is pretty nice for the 15" wheels..... so maybe your local tire
store can recommend something close to this for the 16" wheels? :idea :2cents :thinking

A 235/70R16 is the closest available to a 235/75R15, for what it's worth.
The average 235/75R15 has an outside diameter of 28.88 inches. The average 235/70R16 works out to 28.95

1984 W150 w/a 7.5 Fisher Speedcast, an NP435 & a slant six (because slow but unstoppable!)

Tubes are for split rims, not solid rims.

Hi...
So, assuming the wheels are 53 years old, how would one know whether or not they have a modern radial tire bead?
And thank you to all who have replied this inquiry.
