Re: Electric power steering mod
I see no reason it wont work. Kits for specific applications and universal kits. I installed electric power steering into my Side by Side. Love it.
My truck is younger than me.

Re: Electric power steering mod
I can't remember reading anyone doing it on this site. Nice truck!
Re: Electric power steering mod
I like the idea but have never seen a kit big enough for a pick up truck or full size car. they might be out there I jsut havent seen one. I would never put a system from a toyota corolla in a 2 ton vehicle.

The big 3 all have electric assisted power steering in their trucks.

Appears to be various sources. Little investigating is in order.

Re: Electric power steering mod
I have been seriously considering it... I have a second column to play with and experiment on. There are a few different options for making them work depending on what vehicle you pull the unit out of. The vehicles that have the column mounted electric booster are starting to get plentiful in the local pick-your-part yards.
Considering these units are usually fused with at least a 40 amp fuse, I would at least consider performing the "Police / High Amperage" charging system wiring modification and/or bypassing the ammeter. An electronic/solid state voltage regulator would also be required.

Yes, I just installed a Saturn Vue system. Cut stock steering shaft and welded rag-joint plate to Saturn u-joint eye. Used adapters/electronics ( http://www.epowersteering.com/purchase/ ... h-coupler/ ) from here on the top side. Cut steering column cover to mate to Saturn cover.
Only one orientation that worked due to brake shaft mount location. I fabricated two ear-brackets and welded to the floor pan for the gearbox/motor mounts.
I had to make a z-bracket to move the brake pedal to the clutch location, cut the stock pedal, welded in a 1/2 inch plate to alter the angle and floorpan clearance at full stroke.
I am doing a LS swap, so I had to mount the drive-by-wire gas pedal on the floor instead of the fire wall, had to cut and re-weld gas pedal bracket.
This was INVOLVED. I am sure this swap can be very much simplified, I was cutting and welding without a satisfactory plan a few times and had to stick to that direction due to lack of stock parts....
Cost was CHEAP, $35 for unit, about $150 for electronics/adapters. But a LOT of time and frustration.
I can post pictures, but be warned, I am not proud of the design/polish and would not suggest that anyone copy this implementation. Instead do it better and post it.

Re: Electric power steering mod
While I get the fact that it is a specialty item and the manufacturer has a need to cover for lawsuit/insurance, there is no logical reason a motor is $1900. I always think ahead, what if 3 years down the road it quits working - that would be a bummer.GTEEO wrote: ↑Wed Jun 27, 2018 11:41 amThis looks interesting. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sq-vqCLmZws

Re: Electric power steering mod
In response to a PM inquiry....wanted to make sure this was captured.
question..... Can this be done with a /6?
I assume you read this one and only thread?
There are 'some' pictures there, but hard to see due to fresh POR-15 causing reflections.

This was just a try to make it work effort. With a /6 you have a lot more room in the under-hood region than with my stuffed-in LS. You could look at installing the unit more protruded into the under-hood and not compromising the brake pedal travel?
The Saturn Vue unit only cost $35 at the u-pull-it, a friend of mine got two of them and did not need the second one. So I do not really know how hard it is to pull it.
I do not see how to make this unit work if you have a manual transmission. The unit is bulky.
I did save receipts and part numbers of items I bought to hook everything up to the steering wheel. I could post those.
I would recommend that you only try this if you have an automatic. I just cannot envision getting this to work witha clutch pedal there too. There may be more pancake-like units out there now, I do not know.
