Gear box grease

Post by oldgu »

Ready to fill the steering gear box. 1965 manual D100. I've read to use lithium, white lithium, white lithium marine, marine grease that's blue. Does all of it work about the same? What's the best? Thanks.

Feels like I read that a mix of grease and gear oil? Grease alone can channel away from surfaces?
I'm curious to hear from some others here.

waht does manual say? gear oil only i believe. blue marine grease is terrible stuff. if any water gets in the grease moves out of the bearing and fills with the water because the 2 cannot mix at all. done use it on wheels on truck or boat trailers either. worst idea ever. I replaced many many boat trailer spindles that used it.

70 W200. Manual calls for SAE 90wt gear oil. That's all I've ever used in mine.

I read corn head grease works good for steering box without leaking out.

I had mine rebuilt at Benchworks and here is what they told me to do:
Every 5 years shoot hi-temp lithium/moly grease into the grease fitting until grease oozes out. I'm not sure if yours has a grease fitting or not but my 68 D100 does. If you want to discuss this with a pro who knows his craft, call Pat at (480) 946-3992. Very nice guy who will undoubtedly talk you through what is best.
